Thomas E. Young, 84, of Amsterdam, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2025 after a long battle with illness.
Tom was born in New York City to the late Russell and Isabelle O’Shaughnessy Young. He moved with his family to upstate New York where they began farming.
Tom graduated from Broadalbin High School in 1958. He then joined the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Topeka in the Pacific Theater.
After being honorably discharged, Tom worked at General Electric Company as a machinist in the wire mill and retired after 30 years. In retirement, he was never one to relax. Tom continued to work at a variety of jobs until he was prevented by failing health.
Tom served his community as a cub scoutmaster and as a dedicated member of the Cranesville Fire Department for 48 years and as a member of Amsterdam Elks Lodge No. 101 until his passing.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his siblings, Russell Young, Robert Young, Eleanor Paris and Dorothy “Dot” Young.
Tom is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maureen E. Oathout Young, sons Thomas Young Jr.(Tammy), Michael Jeffrey Young (Laurie) and Peter Brian Young (Kara) , grandchildren, Andrew, Kaitlyn, Mikaela, Camille, and great-grandchildren Braxton, McKinley and Ryker.
Tom will be remembered for his love and dedication to his family, his strong work ethic and his belief that his children be exposed to as many fun learning and social experiences as possible.
He was a fighter until the end.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Tom’s family on Monday, December 8, 2025 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Riley Mortuary, 110 Division St., Amsterdam, NY.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. the funeral home with Pastor Michael Sheridan officiating.
Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery
