                                          February 8, 1941 – July 30, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sisto A. Surento, who passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by the love of his family.

Sisto was born in Amsterdam and a lifelong resident of Fort Johnson, NY. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, andfriend. His quiet disposition, and unwavering love for his family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Sisto proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1964. Following his military service, he dedicated 36 years of his life in a career with the General Electric Company, where he was respected for his expertise, integrity, and commitment to excellence. He retired as a Foreman of the Crane Repair department in 2001.

He was a man who found joy in the simple things in life. Whether spending a day on the golf course, lending a helping hand to a neighbor, or sharing time with his family, Sisto always put others before himself. He believed in serving his community and was a proud member of Amsterdam Masonic Lodge #84, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and Cyprus Shriners.

Above all else, Sisto’s greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Bonnie L. Surento. He was the cherished father of Tammy Thackrah of Amsterdam and Karen Rivera (Matthew) of Hamlin, NY. Sisto is survived by one sister Rosemarie Surento of Amsterdam

He was a proud grandfather to Kaila Rivera, Brittany Francisco (Rick), Katie Wilson (John), and Shawna Garcia (Raul), each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness. He was also blessed to be a great-grandfather to Leena and Ryan Rivera, Brie Lynn and Emma Francisco, and Sadie and Sable Wilson.

Sisto was predeceased by his mother Gertrude Bellows Surento, his father Carmen J. Surento, brother Carmen J. “Shrimp” Surento Jr. and sister Stephana “Stella” Collins. 

He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.

Those who knew Sisto will remember him as a kind, quiet, hardworking, and selfless man. His love was shown not through grand gestures, but through his constant presence, gentle guidance, and willingness to help anyone in need. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled in his familyand in the countless lives he touched through his generosity, humility, and compassion.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that his love, wisdom, and example will remain with us forever. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Sisto’s family on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm at Riley Mortuary 110 Division St, Amsterdam, NY. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to The Montgomery County Office for Aging, 135 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam, NY.
