Peter A. Lewis

Peter A. Lewis of Amsterdam, N.Y., a man whose love for the outdoors and zest for life touched many around him, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, September 14th at the age of 72.

Born with a boundless curiosity and an adventurous spirit, Peter found his greatest joy beneath open skies—whether camping under the stars, casting a line into quiet waters, or cruising down the road on his motorcycle. His love of bluegrass music was the soundtrack of his life, often shared with friends around a campfire or at a music festival, where his laughter and stories carried as far as the music itself.

Peter attended St. Marys Institute and Bishop Scully High School in Amsterdam. As a skilled driver for Callanan Industries for 30+ years, Peter was a proud member of the Teamsters local 294 union.

Peter’s gift was story telling. He had a way of engaging people, spinning tales that could bring tears of laughter and comfort alike. His friendships were lifelong, built on humor, and shared adventures.

Peter was predeceased by his parents: Eileen (Willow) Lewis, and Raymond A. Lewis, as well as his dear brother Paul. Peter leaves behind his beloved children: Raymond, Anastasia and her husband Bryce of Phoenix, AZ, and Leo. He also leaves his wife Lisa, his friend in adventure Mary Ellen Bates, his siblings Michael (Lynn), John (Kelly), James Patrick (Kathy), Mary (Christopher), Robert (Patty), and Thomas along with many nieces and nephews and countless friends who will miss him deeply but carry his stories and spirit forward.

A visitation for the family and friends of Peter will be held at Riley Mortuary on Saturday, September 20th from 10:00 am until noon. Instead of a funeral, the family will gather with friends at a future date to celebrate Peter’s life.

In honor of Peter, take a moment to step outside, tell a good story, share a laugh, rev up your Harley, or listen to a bluegrass tune—and think of him.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Adirondack Land Trust or other local conservation group.
