Peter W. Hosner, 80, passed away peacefully on May 24th after a courageous battle with lymphoma, surrounded by the family he so dearly loved. Peter lived a full life marked by integrity, faith, and a steadfast commitment to those around him.
Born in 1945, Peter was the cherished son of William T. and Helen W. Hosner. He was educated at St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam and graduated from Cranwell Preparatory School in 1963. He went on to earn his B.A. from John Carroll University in Cleveland Ohio, in 1967.
Soon after graduation, Peter married the love of his life, Ann Mullarkey Hosner, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span 57 years. Together, they built a life grounded in love, faith, and family.
Peter dedicated much of his professional life to the automobile industry, working alongside his father at Hosner Motors, Inc., a family business where he established deep community roots. As dealer principal beginning in 1980, Peter led the business to great success, earning ten consecutive Oldsmobile Elite Awards and numerous honors from Cadillac for excellence in sales and customer satisfaction. When the Oldsmobile division was discontinued in 2003, Peter transitioned gracefully, continuing his career with Alpin Haus and later serving as Vice President of Indirect Marketing at 1st National Bank of Scotia.
Peter was a devoted community leader and volunteer. He served as golf tournament chairman and president of Antlers Country Club, co-wrote a well-loved weekly golf column for the Amsterdam Evening Recorder with his dear friend Bob Cantine, and served as play-by-play announcer for local high school sports for many years. He volunteered with St. Mary’s Church’s Bishop’s Fund, the Amsterdam Auto Association, and the Dealer Associations for Cadillac and Oldsmobile in Albany.
Faith was the cornerstone of Peter’s life. A daily communicant at St. Stephen’s Church in Hagaman and St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam., he was active on both parish councils, always leading with humility and conviction.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Peter rooted passionately for the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Indiana University, and Cleveland Browns- maintaining a good natured sense of humor through the highs and lows of fandom, once joking that the Browns may have contributed to his passing.
Above all, Peter's greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a constant presence at their games and events, offering encouragement, pride and candid commentary from the sidelines.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Ann, their children Robert W.(Gina) of Amsterdam, Peter Jr. of Clifton Park, and Margaret Marsden (Jay) of Perth. He was a devoted grandfather to Elizabeth, Lauren, Peyton, John Peter (Jack)and Mairead. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Mary Lynn Walcesky (John) of Rotterdam and Kathy Stees (Rich) of Marysville, PA.
Peter’s life was one of devotion - to his family, faith, work, and community. He will be missed profoundly, but his legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will live on in all the lives he touched.
