Lifelong Amsterdam resident, Nicholas J. Pallotta, 98, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2024.
Born in Amsterdam on February 26, 1926, he was one of five children of the late Michael and Maria Christina Pallotta. Nick was educated locally and graduated from St. Mary’s Institute Class of ‘44.
He had a productive forty one year career with Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation starting as a coal handler and retiring as a consumer representative.
Nick received an honorable discharge after serving with the U.S. Army Transportation Corps aboard U.S.Army Hospital Ship Acadia.
Nick’s passion for helping others extended beyond his professional life. He was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and volunteered with the Holy Name Society for many parish events. He belonged to Mount Carmel Seniors, the Amsterdam Lions Club, Amsterdam Chamber of Commerce, the New York State Association of Certified Football Officials with credit for refereeing more than seven hundred games in his 26 year career. He served on the Greater Amsterdam School District Board of Education for ten years and on the board of directors of Boy Scouts of America Sir William Johnson Council, the Montgomery County Youth Bureau and as past grand knight of Amsterdam Knights of Columbus Council 209.
Nick was an avid golfer, but above all was happiest with the active role he took in raising his three grandchildren, attending all of their activities and assisting with their needs.
Nick is preceded in passing by his parents; his first wife, Mary Salerno Pallotta on August 31 2001; his son, Michael P. Pallotta on April 18, 1989; sisters, Angeline DePasquale and Susan Tofinchio; and brother, Joseph Pallotta.
Surviving are his wife Gretchen Wilder Pallotta whom he married in 2003; brother, Anthony “Babe” Pallotta (Karen) of Amsterdam; grandchildren, Nicholas Pallotta (Tara), Toni Menge (Andrew) and Loryn Pallotta (Stephen Biaolobok); daughter-in-law, Kathi Pallotta (Louis Carleo), five great grandchildren, three stepdaughters, Lucienne Henneberry (Joe), Michele Lallier (Frank) and Christine Pallotta-Reder (Scott), .brother-in-law, Charles Wilder, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial, will be celebrated Friday, July 12, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 39 St. John Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010 with the Very Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis, E.V. as celebrant
Interment will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Amsterdam.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Nick’s family at Mount Carmel Church from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church 39 St. John St. Amsterdam, NY 12010.
