Mario Francesco DiScenza, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Amsterdam, NY, with his loving family by his side.
Mario was born on May 29, 1936, to the late Carmen Louis DiScenza and Maria Vespoli in Cercepiccola, Province di Campobasso, Italy. As a young man he served with the Italian Army during peacetime.
On March 6, 1958, Mario married the love of his life, Vittoria “Vicki” Simiele. Together, they shared 66 years of marriage until her passing in 2024. Together they raised their four wonderful children: Robert (Jackie) DiScenza, Carla ( Brian) Farrell, Maria (Michael) Ottati, and Donna (John) Decker.
Mario cherished his Italian heritage, and was rooted deeply in family and tradition, sharing these values throughout his life. He was a dedicated and hardworking man as a machinist with Fiber Glass Industries.
Whether he was competing on the bocce courts or out for a long bike ride, he always looked forward to returning to his garden. Mario took great joy in talking with his children and grandchildren about the importance of life while tending to his rows of tomatoes and all kinds of vegetables.
Above all, Mario treasured spending time with his beloved Vicki and being surrounded by his children, and his cherished grandchildren: Aaron (Dylan) Decker , Christa (Michael) Decker-Didas, Christopher Ottati, Megan (Aodhan) Ottati-Fogarty, Kevin Ottati, Sean Farrell(Gabriela), Dylan Farrell, and Katherine DiScenza. Mario also leaves behind his beloved nephew, AJ ( Nicole, Devin and Ava) Simiele, as well as his beloved siblings: Rose in Italy, Antonio in Argentina, and sister-in-law Maria in Italy as well as many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mario is predeceased by his sisters Mary and Filomena.
Mario’s legacy will endure through his family’s love and joyful memories of his laughter, guidance and generosity of spirit.
