Janice M. Brownell, a beloved figure in her community and cherished by her family and friends, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on July 29,1945, in Mt. Kisco, New York, Janice spent her formative years in and around Armonk, NY, before ultimately moving to Gloversville, NY.
Janice’s professional life began at Coleco Industries and included significant roles within the New York State Taxation and Finance department. She later retired from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Services, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and commitment to public service.
In the realm of personal life, Janice was married to Elton E. Brownell for 49 years, a joyful union that commenced on November 13, 1976. She faced the poignant loss of her beloved husband, who departed this world on August 13, 2025, a year before her own passing.
Janice Haviland Brownell is remembered for her vibrant personality and close relationships, particularly with her dear sister Marjorie. In addition to her sister, Janice also leaves behind her son, Douglas L. Brownell (Vivian Fitz-James), and her daughter, June R. Browning Jones. Her family further extends to her stepchildren: Elaine Augustine (married to Vance), Elton Brownell Jr. (known as Buddy), Barbara Petrones, and Ellen Anadio (married to Ralph). Janice is also survived by her brother, Fred Haviland, and her grandson, Matthew A. Johnson.
The legacy of Janice's warmth and love carries on through her nephews: Brock E. VanAnden (married to Cindy), Douglas A. VanAnden Jr., Shane M. Bowley (Nancy), and Duane E. Kimmel (married to Gloria).
In her leisure time, Janice found joy in various hobbies, including visiting the casino, historic sites, completing her Christmas shopping, and nurturing her collections of Cabbage Patch Dolls and Department 56 Villages.
A Celebration of Life will take place on March 8, 2026, at the VFW Post 942 in Fonda, NY, where family and friends are invited to gather from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, as they honor and remember a truly remarkable woman.
Janice M. Brownell’s spirit will remain alive in the hearts of those she loved and who loved her in return. Her memory will be cherished as a testament to a life well-lived, filled with love and a strong commitment to family and community.
Janice was enrolled in the Anatomical Gift Program at Albany Medical College.
