Gene E. Landon

Gene Edward Landon, 96, of Coolidge Road, Amsterdam, died August 6, 2025.

Born in the Bronx on March 3, 1929, he was raised in Brooklyn, graduating Erasmus Hall High School.

Gene worked in the forestry industry in Astoria, Oregon, in the late 1940’s. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U. S. Army.

Gene then earned his mechanical engineering degree from Texas A & M University.

In 1959, Gene was hired as facilities engineer for Mohawk Mills/Mohasco Industries, and moved to Amsterdam.

Following many years as a design engineer with Mohasco, Gene finished his career as a supervising construction engineer for the New York State Office of General Services, overseeing the building of state prisons and other facilities.

He held professional engineering licenses in New York, North Carolina and Georgia.

Gene could design, repair or modify anything mechanical. He saved his family countless thousands by never having to hire contractors for jobs and repairs around the houses. He was also a skilled woodworker.

Over the years he enjoyed golf, skiing and water activities, but would sideline any of those for a match of tennis, a sport on which he focused, and played – frequently and aggressively - until age 87.

Gene was predeceased by his mother, Myrtle Landon Leedy, father Edward L. Landon, who died when Gene was six, stepfather, Gerald F. Leedy, brother, Horton P. Landon, and three nieces.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Joan (Brunt) Landon, to whom he was married February 24, 1962 at St. Luke’s Church, Amsterdam, son, Douglas E. Landon, sister-in-law, Ilse Landon, a niece, a grand-niece and a grand-nephew.

The family wishes to acknowledge the staff of The Wells House, Johnstown, for the care and attention Gene received during the final chapter of his life.

A service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 12 noon at Riley Mortuary, 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, with Rev. Dr. John A. Califano officiating, preceded by a calling period from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Private burial in Fairview Cemetery will follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Montgomery County Historical Society, P. O. Box 196, Fort Johnson, New York 12070.
