Francis P. “Frank” Maphia Sr. of Amsterdam, NY , passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 2, 2025 surrounded by his loving family after a long illness at Saratoga Hospital.
Frank was born in Schenectady, NY, on May 16, 1941 the son of Frank and Wilhelmina Maphia. His early life was spent in Minaville.
Frank graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch Senior High School where he was a stand out athlete. He attended Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont.
He retired in 2004 from Colony Liquor Distributors in Menands, NY after a 36 year career.
Frank was the quarterback and head coach of the Glove City Colonials football team. He was inducted into the Colonials Hall of Fame in 1996, He was a lifelong golfer and a member of the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course.
He is survived by the love of his life, Linda Maphia and his children; Kristin Maphia-Lasky (Michael), Francis P. Mapia Jr. (Judith), Jennifer Mormile (Joshua), Maggie Napierski (Eugene), Marcie Russom (Casey), and Joseph Maphia.
Frank is predeceased by his son Nicholas Maphia Sr.
The love he had for his children was limitless and exceeded only by the love he had for his grandchildren; Briana Record, Jordyn Sassanella, Jackson Sassanella, Landon Russom, Molly Russom, Jillian Sassanella and Nicholas Maphia Jr. He was the biggest fan of his grandchildren and could always be found rooting in the stands.
Frank also leaves behind his lifelong friend Joseph Abbattisti
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m at St. Stanislaus Church, Amsterdam with The Very Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis as celebrant.
Inurnment will be private.
