Bernard M. “Bernie” Welch, 68 of Amsterdam, NY; passed away peacefully Sunday, February 9, 2020 at home surrounded by his family.
Born in Amsterdam, on September 2, 1951, he was the son of the late Bernard and Dolores Slowakiewicz Welch.
Bernie received his education at St. Mary’s Institute and was a graduate of Bishop Scully High School in Amsterdam. He also attended Fulton Montgomery Community College.
Bernie retired from the Amsterdam Fire Department with the rank of Lieutenant in 2001 after almost 30 years of service to the City of Amsterdam.
He was a member of the Amsterdam Professional Firefighters Association, Irish American Club, Bigelow Weavers and the Amsterdam Municipal Golf Course.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Kelly Maskosky Welch, whom he married May 10, 1985, one son, Michael (Nicole) Welch of Ballston Spa, NY; two daughters, Kristin (James) Meyers of Amsterdam and Erin (Greg) Allen of Dallas, TX; one brother, Timothy (Betty) Welch of Saratoga Springs, NY; his twin sister, Gail Squillace (the late David) and Barbara (Edgar) Holloway, and granddaughter, Harper Meyers all of Amsterdam; brothers and sisters - in – law, Antonina and Michael Weil, Jacqueline and Joseph Parillo, Richard Jr. and Lucy Maskosky, Annmarie and Pat Ambrose, Monica and David DeAngelis, Suzann Carlton and Nancy and Randy Hitchcock. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Bernie was also predeceased by his mother and father – in - law, Richard and Mary Ann Maskosky.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 11:15 at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010, with Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche, M.S. officiating.
Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
Bernie’s family will receive friends from 9:15 to 11: 15 prior to the mass at St. Mary’s Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable and sent to: Penn State Neurology, Penn State University Development, P. O. Box 852, Hershey, PA 17033. Please identify donations as “In Memory of Bernie Welch.” Donations will support further research in pursuit of a cure for PSP
