Sylvia J Messane

Sylvia J. Messane, 90, of Wilkes Avenue, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Monday afternoon, October 29, 2018 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY.

Born in Amsterdam, NY on June 17, 1928, she was the daughter of the late John and Marie McDermott Stahl.

She received her education in the Amsterdam school system and graduated from Wilbur H. Lynch High School.

Sylvia retired as a bank teller from Montgomery County Trust Company in Amsterdam.

Sylvia was a former parishioner and communicant of the former St. Joseph’s Church and most recently of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam. She was also former member of the Parent Teachers Association in the Amsterdam School District.

On July 8, 1950, she was married to Clayton W. Messane. Clayton passed away on March 13, 2008.
Sylvia is survived by two daughters, Deborah Messane of Amsterdam and Judith Tye of Chincoteague, VA; one grandson, Clayton Tye of Newport News, VA., one nephew, Robert Stahl of Belleair, FL; and sister-in-law, Virginia Stahl of Amsterdam.

Sylvia was also predeceased by her son, Peter J. Messane and a brother, Robert Stahl.

Debbie and Judy would like to extend a special thank you, to Jack and Gloria Skowronek for all of the kindness, help and compassion they showed toward Sylvia during her illness and to the many friends and neighbors for their concern.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 2, 2018 at 12:45 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY 12010, followed at 1:15 by a Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, with Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche, M.S. officiating.

A calling period will be held from 11:00 to 12:45, prior to the service at the Riley Mortuary.

Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.
