Michael S. “Mike” Smith, 72, of Mason Avenue, Amsterdam, NY and Jacksonville, FL; passed on to a pain free life Thursday May 7, 2015 at Albany Medical Center, Albany, NY.

Born on March 10, 1943 in Brookline, MA, he was the son of the late Gregory and Anna Cook Smith. He had lived in Amsterdam for the past forty years, transitioning to Jacksonville for the past six years.

Mike received his education in the Saugus, MA. School system and the American Marine Academy in Daytona, FL. He was employed as a maintenance mechanic for various businesses in Amsterdam.

Mike was a United States Army veteran, serving from Dec. 29, 1960 to October 24, 1962 and was a member of the American Legion Post 701 in Amsterdam, Post 337 Broadalbin, NY and Jacksonville, FL., Post 129. He was also instrumental as a founder and volunteer of the Bread Giveaway Program in Jacksonville.

During his time, Mike was a generous loving soul, always willing and able to help others. He would never say no to a request for assistance. He loved motorcycles, gardening, carpentry, gaming and being Irish. One of his greatest accomplishments in life was raising an outstanding family with his wife Mary Ann Quinn Smith to whom he married August 9, 1965.

Along with his wife, Mary Ann, he is survived by his children, Michael (Elizabeth) of Jacksonville, FL; Colleen of San Francisco, CA; and Ryan (Jeanine) of Rochester, NY; two brothers, Philip (Lynn) of Dracut, MA and David (Helen) of Austin, TX; to loving granddaughters, Caitlin and Helanea both of Jacksonville, his best friend and cousin, Dennis (Judy) Wells also of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by a large family of relatives and friends, who will all miss him dearly.

There are no calling hours or funeral services at this time. A memorial services will be held at a later time and date to be announced.
