Martin Aloysius “Marty” Harrington, 60, of Hagaman, NY, passed away Monday morning February 1, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife and children, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Amsterdam, NY on May 13, 1955 to Jack and Anne Casey Harrington.

Marty received his education at St. Mary’s Institute, Bishop Scully High School, Fulton Montgomery Community College (FMCC), and SUNY Brockport.

He was employed as a sales and marketing representative for Construction Innovations of Ballston Spa, NY.
Marty was an accomplished sports official. He began his officiating career in 1986 refereeing local youth sports and ultimately worked his way up to the collegiate level. Marty was extremely passionate about refereeing. He officiated Division I-AA football in the Ivy League and was inducted into the Capital District Football Officials Hall of Fame. Marty was also a Division III Women’s Basketball official, member of the Mohawk Valley Board of Girls Basketball Officials, and Capital District Football IAABO.

Marty is survived by his wife, Valerie Harrington of Hagaman, NY, with whom he recently celebrated 35 years of marriage. Marty and Val enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. They recently traveled to the Outer Banks, NC for a family reunion which included all their children and grandchildren.
Marty is survived by one daughter, Brittany (Derek) Carpenter of Bedford, NH; three sons, Kyle (Kristin) Harrington of Littleton, MA; Ryan Harrington (fiancée, Lauren Donovan) of Vienna, VA and Matthew Harrington (girlfriend, Sarah Brown) of Hagaman, NY.

Marty was extremely proud to be “Papa” to his five grandsons; Chase, Colby, and Griffin Harrington; and Owen and Emmett Carpenter. All five will dearly miss his funny antics, sense of humor, and ability to make them laugh.

He is survived by his father, Jack Harrington of Amsterdam, NY; his nine siblings; Anne Farrell of Amsterdam, NY; Tim (JoAnn) Harrington of Amsterdam, NY; Maureen Bernat (Angelo Sgarlata) of Guilderland, NY; Nora (Ron) Bartman of Amsterdam, NY; Eileen (Lee) French of Rotterdam, NY; Denis (Caroline) Harrington of Wayzata, MN; Sheila (John) Sawyer of Clifton Park, NY; Mary Kate (Ken) Jensen of Taos, NM; and Brigid Wyszomirski of Las Vegas, NV; Mother-in-law Anna Pansini of Amsterdam, NY; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his faithful dog Kelsey.

Marty was predeceased by his mother, Anne Harrington, father-in-law, Michael Pansini, and brother-in-law William “Billy” Bernat.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:15 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc., 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY, followed at 11:00 by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY.

Interment will follow at St. Stephens Cemetery, Hagaman, NY.

Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Riley Mortuary.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude for the overwhelming generosity expressed over the course of Marty’s battle. They would also like to express their appreciation to Dr. David Schaffer and the compassionate clinical teams of New York Oncology Hematology at Amsterdam and Albany, St. Mary’s Hospital, and Albany Medical Center.
