Madeline McKeon McCune – Obituary

Madeline “Maddie” McKeon McCune, 94 of Amsterdam, NY passed away Monday morning August 8, 2022. Born in Troy on March 15, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Frederick B. and Lena Hoffman McKeon, and niece of her dear aunt Gertrude Hoffman.

Maddie was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, John R. “Rocky” McCune, whom she married on July 16, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Church in Troy.

She was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy. She also graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Amsterdam, and was a Registered Nurse. Maddie worked as an RN at both St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy and St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam. She was also a member of United States Cadet Nurse Core, and volunteered and spent time working in Chicago during the Polio epidemic. Maddie was a member of the St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing Alumni Association.

As her children were growing up, Maddie later joined her husband as a Real Estate Broker in the family business. Over the years, she served as President of the Amsterdam Board of Realtors and Montgomery County Board of Realtors. Maddie was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.

She loved spending time with her family and friends, always entertaining and hosting Super Bowl and dinner parties, pool parties with the family, playing bridge with friends, and then thoroughly enjoying her 5 granddaughters as they grew up.

She is survived by one son, Robert F. McCune (Sandy Burnell) of Amsterdam; two daughters, Mary Pat Devine (Dan) of Latham, NY; and Maureen Mickel (Kevin) of Niskayuna, NY; her five adored granddaughters: Anna Proske (John); Staci Tajon (Ian); Shanon Rivera (Eduardo); Chelsea Mickel and Meghan Mickel; and four great grandchildren: Carson and Hudson Proske, and Jaxton and Kylee Tajon; and one sister, Mary B. McKeon of Troy; She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews in Troy, Texas, Georgia and Arizona.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Patricia A. McKeon; her two brothers George McKeon (Mary), and Fred McKeon (Susan), her Aunt Gertrude Hoffman, as well as many other family members.

A special thank you to her caregiver, Judy Danser.

A very special thank you to Dr. Michael M. Sheridan and Dr. Adam D. Snider for all their years of compassionate care; and to all the staff at St. Mary’s Healthcare, Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility, and Community Hospice these past few weeks for all their wonderful care and compassion.

Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, August 12, 2022 at 10:15 at the Riley Mortuary, Inc, 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, NY, followed by 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam with the Very Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis officiating Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY. Calling hours are Thursday August 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Riley Mortuary.
