Donald Martin

Donald H. Martin, 98, of Woodrow Road, Amsterdam, NY; passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017 at Wilkinson Residential Health Care Facility in Amsterdam.

Born on November 5, 1919 in Amsterdam, he was the son of the late Peter and Elizabeth Wiczipulski Martin.

Don received his education at St. Mary’s Institute in Amsterdam.

Don served with the Civilian Conservation Corps under the War Department, from June of 1935 to September of 1936, where he did work on soil conservation control, Road construction and irrigation control. Don was also an honorably discharged World War II veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1944 to 1945.

Don retired from General Electric, where he was a machinist in the Gas-Turbine Department.

Don was a parishioner and communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Amsterdam.

Don enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra, Big Band Music and the local radio talk shows. He also enjoyed going to dances with his wife, Anne, and attending Mass at Auriesville Shrine and just walking the grounds at the Shrine.

Don was predeceased by his wife, Anne T. Wekler Martin on November 12, 2007. He is survived by one son Thomas Martin of Gloversville, NY; three daughters, Patricia Barone (Phillip), Jeanette Yevoli and Eileen Barker (Chuck) all of Amsterdam, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Don was also predeceased by two sons, Peter C. Martin in 1955 and Robert T. Martin in 1995, his grandson, John Barone, his granddaughter, Mary Beth Jevitt and son-in-law Vincent Yevoli.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday afternoon at 12:30 at St. Mary’s Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam with Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche, M.S. officiating.

Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fort Johnson, NY.

Relatives and friend may call Tuesday morning at the Riley Mortuary, Inc. 110 Division Street, Amsterdam, from 10:30 to 12:00 noon.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Don’s name may be made to St. Mary’s Church or to a charity of ones choice.
